Shrien Alshabasy, mentee
My name is Shrien Alshabasy. I consider myself a media maker because I love playing around with computer programs. I also love to use online resources to expand my writing audience and create cool quotes, t-shirts, or videos! My genre is young adult fiction or light historical fiction intended for a young adult audience. I have been published in my school magazine Beacon Ink as well as every week on pennyandmary.com. I love to make video trailers for my books, and create covers for them as well. I would love to learn how to make really awesome video clips or sound clips that can incorporate my writing. One of my goals as a writer is to bring out the theme perspective and how the way you see things can affect you later in life. I would also love to work with my mentor on branching out to discover different themes and messages that I would like to incorporate into my writing.
Bria Cole, mentor
My name is Bria Cole, and I am a Media Studies MA Candidate at The New School. Media making is a multi-skilled ability, which means many challenges and learning experiences. I strive to work with others to keep learning about various media, especially film, installations, and digital media. It is a great mix of working on ideas, commerce, and culture. I keep myself busy with schoolwork, projects, and visiting the great resources and libraries available in this city! Never bored, I find that media-making is capriciously inventive. With my mentee, Shrien, I look forward to exploring our curiosities together and building skills that will make our ideas happen. It'll be a great year.
This piece was inspired by my desire to tell about the teenage experience.Sometimes it is hard to express your individuality in a social setting that supports blending in. I used my writing skills to create a story and my digital tools (such as iMovie) to construct the stop-motion. This shows how I am because I am observant of others who lose confidence when they come together in a group.
