Nyasiah Colon, mentee
Hello! My name is Nyasiah Colón. I am 14-years-old and this is my first year as a mentee for Girls Write Now (GWN)! I developed a love for writing about two years ago when I wrote my first story, Scarlet Haired Beauty. I decided to apply for GWN because I thought it would be cool to learn from accomplished female writers and improve my storytelling skills. I like writing fantasy and fan-fiction for my favorite video games, animes, books, etc. I would love to learn how to write historical fiction and horror as well. When I’m not writing, I’m focused on my studies. My favorite subjects are Math and Science. I enjoy reading manga, or Japanese comic books, such as Hetalia and Soul Eater. I also love playing video games. I enjoy learning new things, especially about different cultures, as well as traveling. I am very excited to work with and to meet my fellow mentors and mentees. This really is an opportunity of a lifetime and I’m happy to be here.
Katie Bancroft, mentor
Originally from the Bay Area, Katie first worked in theatre as a stage manager and later as a director, writer, dramaturge and producer. After receiving her MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2012, Katie transitioned to screenwriting and filmmaking. She received a Sloan Science grant in 2013 and has since continued writing and directing both her own and commissioned projects. She’s excited to be a mentor for Girls Write Now and hopes to remain involved with GWN for years to come.
For the Digital Exhibition, since I am a HUGE Walking Dead Fan, I decided to make Spec Script for it. A spec script is basically a script that you wrote that is based off a TV series or a drama (which ever you choose) that does not happen in the show. The catch is that your script CANNOT change what has already happened in a show. For example, if you add a character of your own, the character either has to leave by the end of your episode or killed off. Along with the script, there is a slideshow of my teaser. The artwork is by my dad, the idea of the slide show is by my mom,the editing was by my mentor, Katie Bancroft, and the story was written by, well, me XD. Enjoy!
