Leslie Lazcano, mentee
I am Leslie Lazcano a high school senior at Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics. At school, I am expected to write an essay every week -- if I’m lucky. If luck isn’t in my favor, I have to write multiple essays. (It is not that bad, though, because I secretly enjoy them.) I find confidence when expressing my thoughts on paper -- whether it’s science fiction or research -- and my goal for this year is to improve my grammar and writing organization. After school, I am involved in various extra curricular activities such as photography, youth trail advocacy program, mini meds, set design, student government, and community service activities, yet I still manage to find time to write and express my thoughts on paper.
Megan Bender, mentor
My name is Megan Bender, and I am a first-year mentor at Girls Write Now! Why do I write? Because I have so many ideas fluttering around in my head, and the only way to bring them to life is to keep my fingers flapping on the keyboard. Plus, once they’re saved on my computer, I have more space on my mental hard drive for day dreams and frequent trips to imagination land—my favorite place to be. I’m at my happiest when I’m reading or writing young adult fiction, specifically contemporary realism. This year, I would like to focus not only on my mentee’s needs, but also to revive a couple of my own projects that I’ve left simmering on the backburner while I’ve been busy with other things. I have been published in my high school and college newspaper, as well as MeeGenius, a digital-only children’s book publisher.
My name is Leslie Lazcano, and I am a senior at the Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics. This fall I will be attending Marist College, and it will be my first time living outside of the city. Before I go,however, I wanted to pay homage to the city I love. To me there is no image that represents New York City more than the subway system. I give you Rush, a narrative short, written by me and directed by my mentor. I present it to you as both a screenplay and film. Enjoy!
