Darnell Mitchell, mentee
Hi I am Darnell Mitchell, a mentee. I consider myself to be a writer/media maker because I’m not someone who just writes. In my head, it’s words all day. I see the world not as a place made up of things and objects, but of words about those things. I can take a single word or theme and write a series of different projects/stories about it. When I write I like to appeal to those I imagine would read it or understand it. I try to place myself in another person position and write as if I’m feeling those exact same emotions. I do not have a specific genre; my range differentiates, depending on what comes to mind at that moment. My goal as a writer is to express myself and inspire others to do the same. My work has not yet been published, but I have performed at several poetry slams and in my school storytelling club. Recently I have been working on a family-memory project, containing all the memories of my family and turning into one thing. Well, that’s all there is about me. Its Nice to meet you!!!
Lexie Clinton, mentor
Lexie Clinton has been filling notebooks since she can remember. She began her journalism career writing and editing for her high school’s newspaper and then at the Daily Cardinal at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After college she went mad for journalism, spending several years working in the middle of the night—first as an anchor’s assistant and associate producer at CNN’s morning show, and later as a video producer at MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” She recently made a big leap from morning television to education. She is the Director of Communications at Manhattan’s Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School, where she does everything from writing, to photography, to video, to web design. When she’s not surrounded by kids, you can find her searching for a good cup of chai downtown, buying more notebooks to fill, and spending time with her incredible mentee, Darnell.
Here is Darnell's final piece for the Girls Write Now Digital Mentorship Program's Digital Exhibition, WRITE | CODE | SPEAK.
